מהו מקור המילה "צועני"

אטניגנוס [ציגנוס] היא מילה יוונית אשר פירושה "עובד אלילים" או "כופר". מכיוון שהצוענים שהגיעו לאירופה לא היו נוצרים, הכינוי אטסיגאני או אטסיגאנוי, שמקורו במילה היוונית אטניגנוס, הוא הצורה הביזנטית לכינויים ברשומות הביזנטיים. משורש זה נובעות כל צורות הכינויים שבני רומה זכו להם: ציגאן, ציגאנו, ציגאנוס, צועני, בדרך כלל פוגעני ומשפיל.

למותר לציין כי השימוש במילה "צועני" היום היא יותר במובן פולקלוריסטי בידורי.

What is the origin of the word Gypsy

Athinganoi [Tzignos] is a Greek word which means "pagan" or “heretic”. Because the Romany people that came to Europe were not Christians, they of course must have been heretics. We must remember we talk of a time when Christianity drown almost the whole world in blood and suffering.

We learn from the Byzantine records and the middle age history about the insanity of that period.

So, from this root steam all the deceived forms of “Gypsy”: Tzigan, Thigano, Tziganos, Zigeuner, Cygan, usually offensive, discriminating and humiliating. It goes without saying that the use of the word "Gypsy" is now more in folkloric entertainment mode.
