קרוב לוודאי שהמילה "צוענייה", מעלה מיד לפני עיניכם תמונה של מגדת עתידות אקזוטית, צעירה, יפה וצבעונית. אולי היא תהיה זקנה, אם כי גם צבעונית, שבערמומיות מפתה אתכם, לוקחת את ידכם בכדי לנבא לכם את גורלכם. או אולי הזדמן לכם לראות ביריד להקת צוענים, המגיעה בעגלות המקושטות שלהם, מנגנים ושרים. מקצת הנשים רוקדות, ואחרות עוסקות בניבוי עתידות, ואתם נזהרים מאוד ושומרים על ארנקכם, כי אתם יודעים שהצוענים הם שקרנים וגנבים.

ייתכן שאתם מתארים לעצמכם את הצוענים כילדי טבע אקזוטיים ומאושרים.

האמת אודות הצוענים היא כמובן שונה מאוד, והרבה יותר מורכבת מהסטראוטיפים השחוקים, השליליים בדרך כלל, שעבר זמנם.

מכיוון שהצוענים נרדפו בכל רחבי העולם, הם כצפוי אינם בוטחים באנשים מחוץ לקהילתם, ועד לשנים האחרונות לא הרבה היה ידוע אודות אורח חייהם וההיסטוריה שלהם. אבל הדברים משתנים היום לטובה במהירות. ואם אצליח לתרום להצגת הצוענים באורם הנכון, בתיאור הצנוע שלי באמצעות

חפיסת הקלפים הצועניים שלי, הרי שבכך אראה לעצמי כבוד ואשמח.

The Gypsys

The word "Gypsy" probably conjures up before your eyes an image of an exotic, young, beautiful and colorful woman fortune teller. Maybe she'll be old, though colorful, cunningly seduces you, takes your hand to predict your destiny. Or maybe you happened to see at the fair Gypsy band, reaches their decorated wagons, play and sing. Some women are dancing, and others engaged in fortune telling, and you are very careful and keep your wallet tightly, as you know that the Gypsies are liars and thieves.

You may imagine the Gypsies as an exotic and nature's happy children.

The truth about Gypsies is of course very different, and far more complex that the worn obsolete stereotypes, usually negative.

Because the Gypsies were persecuted all over the world, they predictably do not trust people outside their community, and until recently not much was known about their lives and history. But things are changing rapidly for the better today. And if in my humle description I can contribute to present the Gypsys in their true light, I'll I see it in a great honor to myself and I will be happy.
